What is KYBELLA?

Even a tiny bit of extra fat in the upper throat area can cause the appearance of a "double chin." Unfortunately, a double chin can create embarrassment for many people. The additional pockets of fat below the chin (or the submental area) can occur because of aging, weight fluctuations, or genetics. These factors may cause a softer jawline and chin for a less defined profile. At Forma Plastic Surgery, our plastic surgeons in Scottsdale, AZ proudly offer an injection to reduce the appearance of neck fat. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), KYBELLA is the first nonsurgical double chin injection. The active ingredient in KYBELLA is a synthetic deoxycholic acid, which works like the body's natural DA to dissolve and absorb fat cells. After injecting it underneath the chin, patients can see a noticeable decrease in fat. When the fat dissolves, the cells do not re-form so you can enjoy your new, slender neck and defined jawline for years to come.

What are the benefits of KYBELLA?

Small pockets of fat beneath the chin can be difficult to target with diet and exercise alone. Even if you are at a healthy weight and eat a balanced diet, some fat may remain in this area. KYBELLA can reduce unwanted fat without resorting to surgical options like liposuction. Injections are minimally invasive and involve little pain and downtime. Our professionals at Forma Plastic Surgery have years of experience with KYBELLA and can help you achieve the slimmer facial profile you desire.

Who is a candidate for KYBELLA?

Ideal candidates for KYBELLA have a moderate amount of fat below the chin and are not interested in or ready for an invasive cosmetic procedure. This nonsurgical injectable is perfect for anyone who wants to improve their appearance without surgery or downtime. KYBELLA candidates should be in good health and have realistic expectations about their results. Patients should undergo a health evaluation at Forma Plastic Surgery to ensure their eligibility. Our surgeons will examine the treatment area and develop a personalized plan to achieve your desired results.

What to Expect with KYBELLA Injections

A member of our team will complete your KYBELLA injections in one of our spacious treatment rooms. At the beginning of your treatment, you will receive a numbing gel to reduce any discomfort. Once your skin is numbed and cleaned, the injection takes around 15 minutes to complete. We place several small injections throughout the submental area. Some patients may only need one treatment to achieve their goal while others may want a few injections spaced three weeks apart.

After we complete your treatment, you can resume your regular routine. You may experience temporary swelling, numbness, or bruising under your chin, but these effects shouldn't last longer than a couple of days. Please call Forma Plastic Surgery immediately if you feel any unusual side effects, such as difficulty swallowing, facial muscle weakness, or an uneven smile. While the fat that we eliminate doesn't return, the cells that remain can get larger so you should maintain a stable weight after your KYBELLA injections to prevent new pockets of fat from forming.

KYBELLA FAQ

How does KYBELLA work?
The active ingredient in KYBELLA, deoxycholic acid, is designed to break down fat cells in the submental area. After the fat cells are eliminated, these fat cells cannot regenerate. This is why additional KYBELLA injections should not be necessary once you have reached your desired outcome.

Can KYBELLA be used to treat other areas of the body?
Right now, KYBELLA can only be used to treat the submental area. KYBELLA can effectively reduce the look of a double chin. KYBELLA isn't approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for any other areas of the face, neck, or body.

How many treatment sessions will I need?
During your consultation, a personalized KYBELLA treatment plan will be tailored to meet your desired results. Typically, patients get 2 – 4 KYBELLA injections before achieving their goals. KYBELLA injections must also be made about one month apart. You shouldn't get more than six treatments.

Am I eligible for a KYBELLA treatment?
A few factors could make you ineligible to receive a KYBELLA treatment. You must be at least 18 years old, not be breastfeeding or pregnant, and cannot have any infection around your neck. Before receiving treatment, you should be open about any health concerns and your medical history with your injector so that they can determine if you can safely receive the treatment.

Are KYBELLA injections painful?
Most patients report feeling some discomfort during the injection, often described as a burning or stinging sensation. However, a local anesthetic can be applied to minimize any discomfort.

Are the results permanent?
Yes, the results of KYBELLA are considered to be permanent. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they cannot regenerate. However, it's essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent new fat from accumulating in the treated area.
